M8 153" SP Turbo Project

Arctic Cat makes a great mountain sled, but who says more horsepower is a bad thing?! Echo Cycle is known for its cool customs past and present. This time we decided to inject a little bit of turbo into a 2009 M8 162’ Sno Pro.

Taking a snappy stock 144 horsepower machine and bumping it up to a snarling 215 hp isn’t a walk in the park for anybody especially when we stressed it had to run on pump fuel. On the drawing board we would start with a T3 turbo, a custom intercooler and lubrication system, Boondocker fuel controller, and high-pressure fuel-pump with electronic boost pressure regulator.

Off the paper and into the fabrication shop, the key components came to life. Combining billet aluminum stock and our new Miller TIG welder, we developed the custom piping and compact oil tank. Intricate details like these are what makes this thing so special!

Then came the time-consuming installation of the electronics, fuel system, and the trusty Digitron exhaust gas temperature recording system (an absolute must for any highly modified performance engine). The dyno-tuning portion of the project followed once the most advanced fuel mapping available was downloaded into our Boondocker fuel controller. The truth became crystal-clear once the Dynojet print-outs were spit out. We recorded maximum reliable power at 215hp on a smooth and broad torque curve using pump fuel! A beautiful custom sled with clutching optimized for maximum performance and tractability was the finished product. If you need help taking your performance sled to the next level - see what Echo Cycle can do for you!

Rear Wheel HP @ 16 psi boost: 335 hp @ 6500 rpm on pump gas (300% increase in hp over stock) Rear Wheel Torque @ 16 psi 302 ft @ 5300 rpm on pump gas (300% increase in torque over stock) (Wait till we fill it with race gas and turn the boost control up......)
rocket3dynograph
This custom turbo Rocket makes more hp @ 3700 RPM then the stock Rocket 3 makes at redline! (6500 rpm) To put this in kind of power into prospective, lets take the new Ford V8 GT Mustang which makes around 230 hp at the wheels, and around 250 ft of torque at the wheels……. Now take another 100+hp and add it to the wheels, and then take another 50+ ft of torque and add that to the wheels, now shred over 3000lbs of weight, hmm.... mind boggling isn't it!
rocket3turboefi

Even with all the above modifications the bike starts and idles smooth like a stock Rocket 3, and still gets over 50 miles to the gallon. The owner of this motorcycle still uses this bike to get bread and milk in the morning, and takes it in all the local toy runs and rallies..... but when push comes to shove and you roll the throttle on and bring the engine above 3000 rpm, that's when this animal comes alive, the ear piercing whine from the Garrett T04 turbo spooling up to over 100,000 rpm cramming 16 pounds of boost into the intake plenum and the fury of a 2300cc (141ci) pouring out of a 2,1/2 inch wide open exhaust lets loose and has NO mercy for the rider or anything in its path, smoking and tearing the 240mm rear tire apart at any speed, the insane G force trying to drag you into the future as your eye balls sink deep into their sockets trying to exit out the back of your head, while you hold on for your life as telephone poles blast by like a picket fence, you now know what a cannon ball feels like when it leaves the cannon! After running out of gears at redline in top gear at around 180 mph (290 kmh) you roll off the throttle and the loud blast from the blow off valve releases the intake boost, your mind starts to catch up with the earth again and you realize you are still alive, a smile stretches from ear to ear which couldn't be slapped off your face if you tried, and all you can think about is how incredibly fun this motorcycle is!

rocket312oclock
During testing at the drag strip, the bike has sent the front wheel sky high at over 130mph (190 kmh), I guess you could say this bike is not for the faint hearted! The bike has run 9 second passes during this season with ease, this is with a stock rear street tire and no wheelie bar.
